What we do

Retaining walls and the work around them

Every job starts with a site visit, so the quote reflects your block, your access and what you want the area to do.

New walls

Concrete sleeper walls

Stacker-stone, timber-look and smooth concrete sleepers between galvanised steel posts, for gardens, boundaries and entertaining areas.

Structural walls

Core-filled block walls

Reinforced, core-filled besser block walls for higher loads, built to the engineer's design.

Repairs

Wall repairs & replacement

Leaning, rotting timber or failing rock walls removed and replaced with concrete sleepers. Keep any rock you want for landscaping.

Drainage

Drainage behind the wall

A black waterproof membrane directly behind the sleepers, a 100mm slotted ag pipe at the base and 20mm drainage gravel, so water doesn't build up behind the wall.

Excavation

Tight access specialist

Mini machinery for narrow side passages and backyards, plus cut-back, rock breaking and spoil removal when needed.

How we build

What goes into a wall that lasts

  1. Footings to suit the groundPost holes are dug and concreted to suit your site and the wall's design.
  2. Posts set and levelledGalvanised steel posts are set in concrete and spaced to the sleeper lengths.
  3. Sleepers seated properlyReinforced 200 × 80mm concrete sleepers slide in between the posts, with the bottom sleeper on a level base.
  4. Drainage before backfillA black waterproof membrane goes directly behind the sleepers, then the ag pipe at the base and 20mm gravel, before the wall is backfilled.
  5. Backfill and clean-upThe wall is backfilled, spoil is spread or removed as agreed, and the site is left tidy.
Before we start

Council approval and engineering

Many retaining walls need council approval, an engineer, or both. We'll talk you through it at the site visit, and it's the property owner's job to confirm what's required before work starts.

Wall height

Taller walls, and walls holding up a driveway, building or boundary, usually need engineering and approval. Low garden walls often don't.

Your block

Steep slopes, bushfire zones, heritage areas and easements can all change what's required, especially in the Blue Mountains.

Working to a design

Where an engineer is involved, we build to their design. Any engineering changes after the quote is accepted are priced as a variation.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need council approval for my retaining wall?

It depends on the height, what the wall is holding up, how close it is to a boundary and your block's zoning. We'll give you our view at the site visit, and you can confirm with your local council or a private certifier.

Why concrete sleepers instead of timber?

Concrete sleepers don't rot, aren't eaten by termites and handle wet weather far better than timber. They're also non-combustible, which matters on bushfire-prone blocks.

My old timber wall is leaning. Is that urgent?

A lean that's getting worse, new cracks in the ground behind it, or soil washing through the gaps are signs it should be looked at soon. Send Matt a few photos.

Can you get machinery into my backyard?

Usually, yes. We use mini machinery for tight side access. We'll check access at the site visit and agree a route and any protection for paving and lawn before we start.

What about rock?

Most Mountains blocks have sandstone not far down. Breaking out rock takes extra time and equipment, so your quote will spell out how rock and other hidden conditions are handled.

Do you take a deposit?

Yes. A deposit secures your start date, and the balance is due on completion. The terms are set out in your written quote.
